Or as the Dutch call it: Second Christmas Day (Tweede Kerstdag)! Did you know that originally, the Dutch had four Christmas Days instead of two? At the Mainz council back in the year 813, the church decided to extend the celebration of Christmas. Since then, Christmas had to last no less than four days. On all these days it was forbidden to work, because that would bring bad luck. The four Christmas days each got their own focus. The Fourth Christmas Day was traditionally a day especially for children to celebrate. This tradition no longer exists in the Netherlands. Now, we only have two Christmas Days, and much like Boxing Day in the UK, most people use Second Christmas Day to head for the shops or enjoy some delicious Christmas leftovers. What do you think? Should we go back to four Christmas days instead of two?
